Shoni Madden

Shoni Madden is an experienced transportation planner with 10 years of experience in sustainable
transportation, climate change, and community facilitation. A graduate of Environmental Studies, Shoni
specializes in sustainable transportation, but has also worked in the area of climate change, leading 15
communities in Manitoba to begin their sustainability planning efforts as part of a provincial program to
reduce emissions.
Shoni recently joined Urban Systems and works with clients to build a culture of active transportation
through supporting the development of programs, businesses, policies, and plans that get us there. She
previously served as Program Director for the Active and Safe Routes to School program in Manitoba
with Green Action Centre for the past 8 years, working to bring together diverse stakeholders and
address barriers to active transportation in their communities. Shoni led the development of the School
Travel Planning (STP) program in Manitoba, working with municipalities across the province and
delivering several facilitator training sessions. She has worked hard to establish and integrate STP as a
provincial and national planning standard, an effort recognized through receipt of the 2012 Manitoba
Planning Excellence Award. Shoni has also worked more broadly in the area of sustainable
transportation as a founding director and President of the social enterprise Peg City Car Co-op,
Winnipeg’s first and only carsharing service and as an event coordinator with the Red River Valley Clean
Cities Coalition.
Shoni is a mom of two toddlers and has committed her family to a car-free lifestyle. Through the process
of launching Peg City Car Co-op, she has developed a passion for supporting other families to learn how
it is possible for them to bike, walk, bus, and sometimes drive.
